When Should You Go to Urgent Care for a Sore Throat?
When Should You Go to Urgent Care for a Sore Throat?
Most sore throats clear up on their own within a few days. But some don't — and knowing the difference between one you can manage at home and one that needs treatment is the call that can save you a week of misery. Here's exactly what to watch for.
Sore Throats You Can Manage at Home
If your sore throat came on gradually alongside a runny nose, mild cough, or congestion, it's most likely a common cold. These are viral — antibiotics won't help. Most people recover in 3 to 7 days with rest, fluids, and over-the-counter pain relief like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Stay home, drink plenty of fluids, and give it a few days before deciding whether you need to come in.
Signs Your Sore Throat Needs Urgent Care
Come into any HealthCARE Express location if you notice any of the following:
- Severe throat pain that makes it hard to swallow or drink
- Fever over 101°F that isn't responding to medication
- White patches or pus on the back of your throat
- Swollen lymph nodes in your neck that are tender to the touch
- Symptoms that started suddenly rather than gradually
- A rash accompanying your sore throat — this can indicate strep
- Symptoms that have lasted more than 3 days without improving
These symptoms — particularly the combination of sudden onset, fever, and patches in the throat — are the classic presentation of strep throat. Strep is bacterial, which means it responds to antibiotics. Treating it promptly prevents it from progressing or spreading to others.
What HCE Can Do for a Sore Throat
At HealthCARE Express, we can test for strep throat on the spot using a rapid strep test — results in about 10 minutes. If it's positive, we'll prescribe antibiotics before you leave. If it's negative but your symptoms look like something else, we can evaluate for mono, a sinus infection, or other causes and get you a plan.
"Strep is one of the most common things we test for, and patients are often surprised how quickly we can confirm it and get them treated. If you've had a bad sore throat for more than two days, come in — there's no reason to keep suffering while you wait to see if it gets better on its own."

Urgent Care vs. Waiting for Your Primary Care Doctor
If you're in the Texarkana, Longview, or Sherwood area and need to be seen today, you don't have to wait days for a primary care appointment. HealthCARE Express is open 7 days a week with no appointment needed. For strep especially, early treatment matters — the sooner you start antibiotics, the sooner you feel better and the sooner you stop being contagious. For other areas, you can find your nearest clinic below.
What to expect at your visit
Walk in, check in at the front desk, and tell us you have a sore throat. Most sore throat evaluations at HCE take 30 to 45 minutes from the time you walk in. We'll assess your symptoms, run a rapid strep test if indicated, and have you out the door with a plan — or a prescription — the same visit.
