Drug Testing for Employers: What Your Program Needs

Drug testing for employers comes down to three things: knowing which tests you actually need, getting results fast enough to keep hiring moving, and making sure every collection holds up if a result is ever challenged. HealthCARE Express handles all three — pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, and DOT testing — with walk-in collections at clinics across Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma.

Which Drug Tests Does Your Business Need?

Most employers need more than one type of test. Here's how each one fits into a workplace drug testing program:

•    Pre-employment testing screens candidates before their first day. If the position is regulated by the Department of Transportation, it requires a urine lab test.

•    Random testing is unannounced, which is what keeps a drug-free workplace policy credible instead of just a line in the handbook.

•    Post-accident testing helps determine whether drugs or alcohol played a role in an incident. 24/7 on-call service is available at some HCE locations.

•    Reasonable suspicion testing gives you a documented, by-the-book way to act when a supervisor has concerns about an employee.

•    Return-to-duty and follow-up testing verifies a negative result before an employee goes back to work — required by DOT for drivers.

•    DOT and federally mandated testing covers safety-sensitive roles governed by federal drug and alcohol rules.

If you're building a policy from scratch, start with pre-employment and post-accident testing. Those are the two moments where a result matters most — before someone is on your job site, and right after something goes wrong.

5-Panel vs. 10-Panel Drug Tests: Which One to Choose

A 5-panel drug test is the workplace standard. It screens for the same five drug classes DOT tests for: marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, opioids, and PCP. A 10-panel drug test adds additional classes such as benzodiazepines, barbiturates, and methadone.

For DOT-regulated positions, the panel is set by federal rules, so there's nothing to choose. For everyone else, let your written policy and the nature of the job drive the decision. Roles with access to medications or heavy equipment are where employers most often go broader. HCE offers both 5- and 10-panel screens.

Urine, hair, and nail testing

Urine testing is the standard for workplace and DOT programs. Hair and nail testing look back much further — hair testing can detect use as far back as 7 to 90 days — and are often used in court settings or when an employer wants a longer detection window than urine can provide.

DOT Drug Testing: What's Different for Commercial Drivers

DOT drug and alcohol testing follows strict federal procedures, and there is very little room for error. Collections must be urine lab tests, every step is documented on a chain-of-custody form, and drivers who violate the rules can't return to safety-sensitive work until they complete return-to-duty and follow-up testing.

That's why the collection itself matters as much as the result. At HCE, our collectors are certified through Nationwide Medical Review and our trainers are certified through DATIA, and every collection follows federal guidelines. And because HCE handles both DOT drug testing and DOT physicals, drivers can often take care of both in a single trip.

“Most employers who call us aren’t worried about the test itself — they’re worried about how long it takes and whether the paperwork will hold up. We get the employee in, collect it by the book, and keep the employer in the loop the whole way. That’s the part people notice.”

Setting Up Employer Drug Testing at HCE

Whether your crews are based around Texarkana, Longview, Shreveport, or the Oklahoma City metro, there's likely an HCE clinic close to your job site. Employees can walk in without an appointment, with evening and Saturday hours at most locations — so a new hire can test the same day the offer goes out.

Setting up an employer account takes one phone call to (903) 791-8575 ext. 1227. We'll set up billing, authorization forms, and the mix of services your business needs, from a single pre-employment screen to a standing random testing program. Employer-sponsored testing is billed directly to your account, not to the employee. You can see everything else we offer on our occupational medicine page.

What employees should bring

A photo ID, plus any employer paperwork or chain-of-custody forms you've provided. That's it. Rapid on-site testing and prompt reporting keep your paperwork moving and your new hire on schedule.
