Does My Kid Need a Sports Physical? What Parents Need to Know Before School Starts

School starts soon — and if your child wants to play a sport, most schools won't let them on the field without a completed physical on file first. It's one of those things that's easy to forget until it's urgent. HealthCARE Express offers sports physicals and back-to-school physicals every day of the week, no appointment needed, at clinics across Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana.

Why Schools Require a Physical Before Sports

A sports physical — formally called a Pre-Participation Physical Evaluation — checks whether a student is healthy enough to safely compete. Schools and state athletic associations require them because the risks are real. Undetected heart conditions, blood pressure problems, prior injuries, and respiratory issues can all become serious when a kid is pushed hard during a season.

The exam is quick — typically 15 to 20 minutes — and covers cardiovascular health, musculoskeletal function, vision, blood pressure, and medical history. A physician reviews everything and signs the form your school requires. Most kids are cleared without any issues. The point is making sure.

What Happens During a Sports Physical at HCE

Our physicians complete a full evaluation that meets your state's athletic association requirements. Here's what the visit covers:

Heart and cardiovascular check. Blood pressure measured and heart rhythm assessed — the most critical safety piece of the exam.

Musculoskeletal assessment. Range of motion, joint stability, and any history of sprains, fractures, or prior injuries reviewed.

Vision screening. Basic visual acuity check to flag anything that might affect performance or safety.

Medical history review. Asthma, allergies, prior concussions, surgeries, and current medications all discussed.

Physician sign-off. The completed school form — ready to hand to your coach or athletic director — before you leave.

Back-to-School Physicals: Not Just for Athletes

A sports physical and a general back-to-school physical aren't exactly the same thing. Some schools — especially for younger kids entering kindergarten or middle school — require a wellness physical that checks immunization records, development, and overall health heading into the school year. If your child isn't in athletics but their school requires a health form, that's a general wellness physical.

HealthCARE Express handles both. Not sure which form your school needs? Bring it with you — our team will make sure the right documentation gets completed.

Don't Wait Until the Week Before School

Every summer, the final week before school begins brings a surge in physical requests — and long waits to match. Pediatricians and primary care offices in most markets have no availability left. HealthCARE Express is walk-in all week long, but earlier is always easier.

“We start seeing the back-to-school physical rush as early as July,” says Dr. David Caltrider of HealthCARE Express. “Get it done before August and you walk right in. Wait until the week before school and everyone is in the same line. The last thing any kid needs is to miss the first week of practice because paperwork wasn’t ready.”

Most physicals at HCE are completed in well under an hour from the time you walk in.

What to Bring to the Visit

To keep things moving quickly, bring:

The physical form from your school or athletic association (check the school’s website before you come in)

Your insurance card — sports physicals may be covered, ask at check-in

A list of any current medications your child takes

Relevant medical history — prior surgeries, concussions, or chronic conditions

No form yet? Don’t let that stop you. We keep standard physical forms on-site that are accepted at most schools in our area.
