Do You Need Stitches? Here’s When Urgent Care Can Help
When you get a small cut, it’s easy to clean it, throw on a bandage, and move on with your day. But what happens when the cut is deeper, won’t stop bleeding, or just looks serious?
That’s when a lot of people start asking:
“Do I need stitches? And do I go to the ER or urgent care?” "Where is an Urgent Care near me"
Stitches are something we handle at urgent care every day. Even if it looks a little scary, you may not need a trip to the emergency room.
Do I Need Stitches?
It’s best to have a medical professional check your injury. Here are common signs your cut may need stitches:
- The cut is deep, long, or gaping open
- Bleeding doesn’t stop after 10–15 minutes of direct pressure
- The edges of the skin won’t stay closed
- The area feels numb
- The cut is on the face, near a joint, or another sensitive area
- The injury was caused by a bite or dirty object
If you’re unsure, it’s always better to get it checked out. Getting stitches can help the wound heal properly and reduce the risk of infection or scarring.s sooner rather than later can help prevent infection and reduce scarring.
Urgent Care vs. ER: Where Should You Go?
We get this question all the time and honestly, it can feel confusing in the moment.
Go to Urgent Care for Stitches if:
- The wound is on an arm, leg, hand, or another area where movement won’t pull it open too much
- You can still move the area normally (fingers, toes, wrist, ankle)
- You don’t have signs of infection (spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever)
- You’re otherwise feeling okay and not dizzy or faint
In many cases, stitches are best placed within about 6–12 hours. Some areas (like the face) may be closed later, but the sooner you’re evaluated, the better.
If you’re not sure, call ahead. Most urgent care clinics can tell you quickly whether they can treat the wound—or if you should head straight to the ER.
This is where urgent care shines. We can clean the wound, provide stitches, and get you taken care of quickl no long ER wait times.
Go to the ER if:
- Bleeding won’t stop after 10–15 minutes of firm pressure
- The cut is deep, jagged, or gaping widely (you can see fat, tendon, or bone)
- It’s on the face, eyelid, genitals, or over a major joint and may need specialized repair
- You have numbness, tingling, or trouble moving the area (possible nerve or tendon injury)
- There’s a crush injury, puncture wound, or an object stuck in the wound
- The injury was caused by an animal or human bite
- You may have a broken bone, or the wound is heavily contaminated
What to do while you’re on your way:
- Rinse gently with clean water if you can
- Apply firm pressure with a clean cloth or gauze
- Keep the injured area elevated
- Cover it loosely and avoid using ointment until you’ve been seen (it can make closure harder)
- When is the “stitch window”?
