Yes, you can get blood work at urgent care, and at HealthCARE Express you don't need an appointment to do it. Walk in, talk with a provider about what you need checked, and the draw itself takes just a few minutes. Here's exactly what the process looks like from start to finish.
Why You Might Need Blood Work
Blood work shows your provider what's happening inside your body that a physical exam can't. Some of the most common reasons patients come in for labs:
• You've been tired, run down, or foggy for weeks and can't figure out why
• Your annual wellness visit is due and you want to know your numbers
• You want to check your cholesterol or blood sugar
• You're managing an ongoing condition and need follow-up labs
• Your provider wants to confirm or rule out an infection or another cause behind your symptoms
Sometimes blood work is the whole reason for the visit. Other times it comes up while you're in for something else. Either way, it can usually be done in the same trip.
What to Expect During Blood Work at HCE
Check in at the front desk
Walk into any HCE location. No appointment needed. Let the front desk know you're there for blood work, and have your photo ID and insurance card ready.
Talk with your provider
Your provider will ask what's going on, review your health history and medications, and decide which tests make sense for you. This is a good time to bring up anything you've been wondering about, even if it feels small.
The blood draw
A team member will clean a spot on your arm, usually the inside of your elbow, and use a small needle to collect a few small tubes of blood. You'll feel a quick pinch, and the whole thing is over in a few minutes.
If needles make you nervous, or you've ever felt lightheaded during a draw, tell us before we start. We can have you lie back, talk you through each step, and go at your pace.
After the draw
You'll get a bandage and a little pressure on the spot, and then you're free to go. Most people head straight back to work or the rest of their day.
How to Prepare for a Blood Test
A little prep makes the visit go smoother:
• Ask about fasting. Some tests, like a cholesterol panel or a fasting blood sugar, are more accurate if you haven't eaten for 8 to 12 hours beforehand. If you're not sure whether your test needs it, call your nearest clinic before you come in.
• Drink water. Water is fine even if you are fasting, and being well hydrated makes veins easier to find.
• Dress for it. Short sleeves or sleeves that roll up easily make the draw quicker.
• Bring your medication list. Include vitamins and supplements, since some can affect results.
• Plan a snack. If you fasted, eat something soon after your draw.
When Will You Get Your Blood Test Results?
It depends on the test. Some results come back quickly, while others are sent to an outside lab and can take a few days. Either way, your provider will follow up once your results are in and explain what they mean in plain language, including whether anything needs more attention.
“A lot of people put off blood work because they assume it means waiting weeks for an appointment. It doesn’t. Most of the time it’s a quick conversation, a quick draw, and you’re on your way, and those numbers tell us a lot about how you’re really doing.”
